What actually makes a CV template ATS-friendly

Applicant tracking systems (ATS) parse a CV into fields — name, work history, skills — before a recruiter ever opens it. The layout choices that matter most are structural, not cosmetic.

Single-column layouts are the safest bet: the parser reads one linear flow of text, top to bottom, in the order a person would read it. Sidebar layouts split the page into two flows, which some older parsers read out of order — name and contact details from the sidebar can end up interleaved with the body copy.

Skill levels shown as bars or dots look clean, but a parser only sees text. If "Expert" or "Fluent" only exists as a graphic fill, that information never reaches the system at all — a plain text list is safer if ATS compatibility is the priority.

None of this affects whether a human reader can understand your CV — it only affects the small number of applications that pass through a parser first. Every template in MellowCV is built with a real, selectable text layer in its exported PDF regardless of layout, and each template page shows its own ATS assessment so you can weigh design against parsing risk.
